  • To make the baby food, Mash any one of the fruits – banana, papaya, sapota very well until smooth.
  • If desired add it to a blender and puree until smooth. To thin down add a few spoons of boiled and cooled water. Fruit puree is ready.
  • If using cooked rice, then puree together rice and any of the fruit – (banana, papaya, sapota or steamed apple) along with some boiled and cooled water. Fruit flavored rice is ready.
  • You can also feed only steamed apple. Peel and chop the apples. Bring half cup water to a boil and add the apples to it.
  • Cook until the apples are slightly tender just for a minute or 2. Cool and puree with rice or just the steamed apple. Apple puree is ready.

Making 7 months baby food recipes

  • Wash rice and soak in water for at least 30 mins.
  • Pressure cook on a medium flame for 2 to 3 whistles. You can also cook in a pot until soft.
  • Apple flavored rice cereal : When the pressure goes  down, open the lid and add grated apple. Cover and cook for 2 to 3 mins. Cool and make a smooth puree. If needed add some boiled and cooled water. Add few drops of hot ghee. Apple flavored rice is ready.
  • Banana rice cereal : Cool the rice completely. Add banana and rice to a blender and make a fine puree. Pour few tbsps boiled and cooled water if desired.

Making 8 months baby food recipes

  • Wash rice and dal in a cooker or pot a few times until the water runs clear. Add grated carrots and pour water.
  • Pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles on a medium heat. If cooking in a pot add more water as needed.
  • When the pressure goes down, using a masher mash the food to smooth. This is the stage you must be teaching you baby to eat mashed foods. Reduce feeding pureed foods. Add ghee to hot food and serve warm. Rice dal baby food is ready.

    Hey Swasthi,
My son is 2 & half year old. He is a very selective eater. He hasn’t got his back teeth yet. So he is finding great difficulty in eating solid foods still. He likes spicy food though. Please suggest some good recipes for him.
    Worried mom,

      Hi Priya,
Some toddlers may take up to 3 years to get through the teething phase.
Please check this baby/toddlers section for recipes. You can serve most foods now, just mash up a bit and feed.

        Hi Lilly,
I usually suggest not to feed khichdi for dinner for babies under 18 months, since dal might be gassy and may disturb their sleep in the night. But you can feed 3 to 4 times in a week since ur baby is already 19 months, but make sure you soak the dal as mentioned in the khichdi post. I suggest making the lunch more protein based (dal based), dinner more veggie based as it is easy to digest and more quantity of veggies are consumed. I used to prefer serving more stir fried veggies with rasam to my toddlers for dinner since rasam is light on the tummy and a good amount of veggies are consumed if mashed and mixed with the rasam rice, millets/ragi balls etc. With khichdi the amount of veggies used is not much. Also another benefit of this, you can slowly move your kid to your meal. What you cook for other members of the family, can be served with out making it much spicy and hot. Hope these help.

      Hi Prathyusha,
iam happy to know she is eating little at least now. I suggest you try idli, since it is very good for her to gain weight. You can find my idli recipe here.
You can also try set dosa, it turns very soft. Make it with butter.
pesarattu with ghee, 1/2 to 1/3 of one is good enough.
here is another version of instant pesarratu
poha pongal , make it a dry version if she likes
      ragi dosa
You can also try gunta pongadalu, paneer stir fry, boiled potato and ghee for breakfast.
If you haven’t read this post on baby weight gain foods. It may help you to get some ideas. Hope these help

      Hello teena,
sorry that i couldn’t reply u early, was busy with the kid’s assessments. glad to know ur little one loved the potato rice. you can use spinach instead of methi. i used to mash all the foods except for the ones including chickpeas or green gram with high fiber.until he completed 2 yrs, i used to puree foods with high fiber in a small blender jar kept separate for baby foods. for milk based recipes, just check baby toddler and sweets section, you will get lot of ideas, but don’t use sugar to make them.if you have any queries do drop a comment on that particular post, i will answer you.
      Thanks for your lovely feedback

Hi Sangeetha! nice suggestions. but the safety of using hing for babies is still unknown (not enough research is done) and garlic actually contributes to gas and some times induces stomach pain, so i do not use them. i only use ajwain or monsoon spice mix which has cumin in it, if the climates is cold. Thanks for your suggestions dear
